The "Way to Work" program was started in Dutchess County NY in 2001 and was originally called the "Wheels to Work Program." According to a press release, the process is open to families who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or whose family income is less than 200 percent of the poverty level.

In addition to showing need for the automobiles, those participating in the program must also take classes in financial boot camp, credit score workshops, vehicle registration and vehicle insurance services. The programs will even guide persons through the process of getting a drivers license and learning how to drive.

Since the programs inception in 2001, 920 cars have been provided to those completing the program. For more information on how to apply for the "Way to Work Program" you can visit the Dutchess County Family Services Website, or click here for their brochure PDF.
