Virtually Tour 21 Abandoned Locations Along US 9 in Poughkeepsie, New York
When we started to count just how many buildings are lying empty on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie, New York we couldn't believe it.
You've probably noticed that there seems to be more and more abandoned businesses on Route 9 these days. But when we attempted to document all of them between Poughkeepsie and Fishkill we had no idea there were so many empty buildings.
As we traveled up and down Route 9 between the City of Poughkeepsie and Fishkill we ran across 21 businesses that, for whatever reason, are no longer open. This doesn't even include many of the smaller stores located in strip malls or inside of the Poughkeepsie Galleria.
How many of these places do you remember visiting?
Coyote Grill
Once a thriving restaurant, it's now empty with a blue tarp covering the back end of the building. It's currently for sale.
Germano's Auto Center
Located next to Price Chopper in Poughkeepsie, this repair shop and the mattress store attached to it have remained abandoned for years.
Eastern Mountain Sports
Just recently closed, it's hopeful that someone else will eventually move into this prime location next to Table Talk Diner on Route 9.
Golden Corral
One of the biggest business blunders in Hudson Valley history, Golden Corral was shut down just weeks after opening. The chain has been quoted as saying the experience was so bad, they refuse to ever open up a franchise at this location again.
Mercury Grand Hotel
This run down hotel across from Bonefish Grill in Poughkeepsie had some of the worst reviews on TripAdvisor with travelers even suggesting that you'd be better off sleeping in your car than staying at this now-abandoned inn. It looks like crews are currently on site doing work to to the building.
Osho
This legendary Japanese steakhouse across from the Poughkeepsie Galleria was a Dutchess County favorite for decades. It just recently closed, but already looks completely run down and overgrown.
Kmart in Poughkeepsie
This South Hills Mall location has been closed for a year and there seems to be no sign of another business moving in any time soon.
Castaldo's Deli
Located across from Kohl's, Eric Castaldo sold the business in February of 2016. It closed a few months later, but a sign on the door said it would open soon. We're still waiting.
Sunburst Furniture Repair
This may be one of the coolest buildings in the area. With it's trippy, chrome stripes and funky windows it's surprising that no one has bought the building after it closed down for good. Sunburst was located next to Wendy's near the Village of Wappingers.
Arrow Auto Glass
Sitting right across from Dairy Queen on Route 9 in Wappingers, this business remains closed. The formerly run down strip mall next door, however, has been completely renovated. So here's hoping something will be done with this eyesore soon.
Sonic
This building near Hannaford in Wappingers Falls has been dormant since closing a year ago. The uniquely styled archetecture and car ports will probably make it hard to find a new tenant. Most likely the structure will eventually get torn down and rebuilt if someone ever does decide to move their business to this location.
Service Station
Abandoned for decades, this old service station still sits on the corner of Route 9 and Old Hopewell Rd.
The Plant Depot
After 22 years in operation, the Plant Depot closed down in 2015. It still sits vacant today.
Consignment Monster
This sprawling building next to N&S Supply used to be the home to several different furniture stores. Most recently it was something called Consignment Monster. The building inspector now has a violation note on the door and the building is obviously in disrepair.
Meineke Car Care Center
Located on the Northbound side of Route 9 in Fishkill, this Meineke shop has boarded up garage doors and chains across its driveway entrance.
Joe's Italian Marketplace
This legendary deli closed down a couple of years ago, but new tenants have yet to move in to the empty storefront in the Lawrence Farms plaza.
Joe Willy's Fish House
After an appearance on the Food Network's "Restaurant Impossible," Joe Willy's decided this location near Splash Down just wasn't working. The business moved to Wappingers, but the old building is still there without a tenant.
Fishkill Outlet Mall
Just below Walmart on Route 9, the Fishkill Outlet Mall has several unoccupied buildings. For some reason, the new Chipotle and Five Guys decided to build in right in front of these abandoned storefronts instead of just taking them over.
Jamesway
Probably one of the saddest sights in the Hudson Valley is the area surrounding the old Dutchess Mall. This sprawling building just below I-84 once housed a busy Jamesway store.
Service Merchandise
Another remnant of the old Dutchess Mall still stands, but its doors and windows are boarded up.
Fishkill Strip Mall
The businesses next to the Dutchess Mall soon left after the mall closed up. Today all that's left are these dilapidated old store fronts.
Our tour of abandoned Hudson Valley businesses didn't even take us north of Poughkeepsie. Several more empty supermarkets and abandoned stores dot Route 9 through Hyde Park, Staatsburg, Rhinebeck, Red Hook and Tivoli.
