The Blue Moon Will Light Up New York Skies This Month
I love this time of year! We are currently in spring and watching all of nature blossom. The grass and trees are so green and we get to watch the flowers bloom too. It’s been warmer, sunnier each day and it even seems as if the birds are singing their happy songs.
At night, we may hear the spring peeper and owls with their chorus. It’s possible that we may have spotted raccoons and skunks during spring nights so far too. We can also keep an eye out for the moons that we will see this year!
Here’s The Old Farmers Almanac’s ‘Night Sky Guide For May’
The Old Farmer’s Almanac shares helpful information all throughout the year. I love learning about their gardening tips and plants along with their weather forecasts and astrology. Nature lovers can get excited about one of their social media posts highlighting moons.
Outdoor enthusiasts have been able to see some incredible full moons so far in 2026. There have been the wolf and worm moon. Personally, I loved the pink moon! It was such an incredible scene and magical. On May 1, 2026, we saw the flower moon within New York State.
Also during this month, The Old Farmer’s Almanac highlighted that we can,
“So, remember to look up on May 18 when Venus makes a stunning conjunction with the Moon, again on May 30 when the Moon meets up with red supergiant stat Antares”
In addition to this nighttime viewing event, we can plan one for the end of May too!
Here's When You Can See The Blue Moon In New York State
Looking ahead, we can take a glance at the strawberry and buck moon this year. However, another incredible sight featuring a blue moon will appear this month.
On Facebook, The Old Farmer’s Almanac shared an exciting post about the Blue Moon.
We can see the Blue Moon on May 31, 2026 here in New York State. They taught us something really interesting about moons. The Old Farmer’s Almanac explained,
“If a full Moon occurs on the first of a month, there will be a second full Moon—a Blue Moon—at the end of the month, too (except in February).”
If you want to see when you have the chance of seeing these moons, I found a helpful tool on the Old Farmer’s Almanac’s website. You can click through Astronomy and then you will see moons. You can also scroll through cities in New York State.
I chose Poughkeepsie and now I’m able to see the next full moon and it’s time in the area. The time for the Poughkeepsie, NY area is 4:46am to see the Blue Moon!
How Do You Usually Feel During A Full Moon In New York State?
While some don't pay attention to the moon and its cycles, others choose to pay attention and see how it positively impacts their life. We may notice ourselves saying that someone is acting a certain way because of the full moon.
I notice that sometimes I have a lot of energy and it will usually be a full moon. The Old Farmer’s Almanac included that there is a theory behind the full moon effect. For some, this can date back to their ancestors who traveled by moon light. They also highlighted,
“Our sleeping patterns are controlled by our natural circadian rhythms— the day and night cycles driven by Earth orbiting the Sun. But there are also circalunar rhythms, which are tied to lunar cycles.”
