Residents of any small town would not consider empty buildings a good thing, especially when they've sat vacant for long periods of time.

Vacant Putnam Lake Properties

Putnam Lake is a Hamlet of the Town of Patterson In Putnam County, NY. Originally, the community was a vacation getaway for city folks who wanted Lake property in the country. Today, it’s not any kind of weekend or destination getaway but a great place to live, I would know, I grew up there. Like any small town, Putnam Lake, NY has its setbacks. It’s difficult to open any business and even harder to keep the doors open. These are some of the long vacant commercial properties of “The Lake.”

This is not my first rodeo -- I’ve written similar articles about Danbury and Brookfield in CT. So, let me tell you what happens next. There is a small but obnoxious group of shortsighted people who will be outraged by this.

Questions like, “Why point out the negative?” and “Where’s your community pride?” are going to follow. I point these things out because they need have attention drawn to them. The people responsible for them will let them continue to rot before you don't voice your displeasure.

I love Putnam Lake and this is not its identity -- far from it. The community is loaded with wonderful, hard working people. The other group that will be upset with me are the private businesses or banks that own the property.

They don’t want anyone complaining, it’s far less expensive for them when the public stops complaining about how ugly and dangerous these properties are.

A year after I did this in Danbury, an infamous property was torn down and is being replaced by new business. Am I taking credit for that? Yes, yes I am. Also, no, I'm not. It's complicated.

Danbury Bennigan's Building Gets Torn Down

Bennigan's Restaurant has been closed for many years in Danbury, Connecticut but the building has remained empty. Hat City residents have had to stare at the eyesore for far too long in a prominent location at 106 Federal Road. Today, (3/23/21) the building was taken down and I-95 was there to witness it and captures these exclusive images.

Vacant Brookfield Properties Give Me the Creeps

Brookfield Connecticut is a beautiful New England town with picturesque landscapes and architecture. It does have one section of road that is about a mile long, that time has forgotten. When the highway got extended, the life started to drain from this portion of Federal Road and COVID-19 put the finishing touches on any business that was hanging on for dear life. There are supposed to be people in these places, that's why they were made. The absence of humanity in these spaces makes them tragic and chilling.
