NY HAM Radio Enthusiasts Can Take FCC License Exam in October

Are you a HAM Radio, or amateur radio enthusiast? Do you know what Ham radio is? The definition, for HAM radio, is that it is the use of the 'radio frequency spectrum for purposes of non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, self-training, private recreation, radio sport, contesting, and emergency communications.'

There is an opportunity for HAM radio users to take a class and to get licensed by the FCC (Federal Communications Company). When is the licensing exam and the training course that is available for persons as well? Keep reading for all of the information.

When is the three-day training course for HAM radio enthusiasts?

The three-day training class that takes place before the exam, will be taking place on Friday, October 27th from 6:30-8:30 pm; Saturday, October 28th from 8 am-5 pm; and Sunday, October 29th from 8 am-noon. The three day program is free to attend and it will be held at the Emergency Response campus, located at 392 Creek Road, Poughkeepsie. While the class is free to attend you will need to RSVP by October 1, 2023.

When is the FCC License Exam for the Ham Radio License?

The examination will take place at 1 pm on Sunday October 29, 2023. The examination fee is $15 and if you pass the exam and want to get a license that will cost you an additional $35. The exam is being held in partnership with the Mount Beacon Amateur Radio Club and is based on the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual 5th Edition.

Amateur Radio Winter Field Day

So what do you do when you're a bunch of crazy amateur radio operators on a cold day in the middle of winter? Well you go outside and set up radio facilities and sit outside or in un-heated communication trailers and talk on the radio, of course! That's what members of the Rainbow Canyon Amateur Radio Club did during the annual Winter Field Day the last weekend on January. It is, ostensibly, an exercise on how we can set up and be able to provide emergency communication in less than ideal conditions. But it is also a fun, albeit chilly activity to engage with amateur radio operators around the world. One of our operators during this field day may contact with someone in France. We had a lot of fun, shared some food and stories and just enjoyed learning from each other. And we chilled...literally. But we're not always crazy, we do this in summer, too.
