Did you know that Poughkeepsie, NY was once the second capital of New York state? I love learning history about New York State, especially in the Hudson Valley.

Discover Upstate New York shared this information and also included that Poughkeepsie, NY was known for being "Queen City Of The Hudson".

Along with its historical roots, this area also has a lot of shopping options to explore. The Poughkeepsie Galleria has drawn visitors to the area for many years. Other nearby stores include Kohl's, Ulta and more. 

In January 2025, the Hudson Valley welcomed their first Plato's Closet. I visited this location and had a great experience.

Known as a "Thrift & Consignment Store", Plato's Closet has over 500 stores. At participating locations, guests can bring in their gently used clothing and accessories that they would like to sell at Plato's Closet in their Poughkeepsie, NY location.

Soon enough, a new business will also take over nearby.

Fika & Hygge will open their doors in Spring of 2025 in the Poughkeepsie, NY area. They look forward bringing together friends, families and more in their space.

They also shared that Fika & Hygge,

"will be Poughkeepsie’s go-to spot for delicious Swedish candy, rich European coffee, and cozy conversations"

Owners Deb and Daryon have created a space for the community to come together to experience delectable candies and crafted coffee options.

Fika & Hygge have already shared their vision of how they hope their experience will be.

"Imagine this: warm coffee in hand and the sweet smell of freshly baked cardamom buns filling the air."
