Community Gun Buyback Safety Event Being Held in Ulster County, NY
Gun violence has become a major issue in the state and programs like this are designed to try to take dangerous weapons off the street.
New York State Attorney General Letitia James has been organizing gun buyback programs across the state and the latest one will be in collaboration with the Kingston Police Department and be held in Ulster County. Gun safety buyback programs allow individuals to bring in a weapon that meets the criteria below and exchange it for compensation.
IMPORTANT RULE:
Any gun that is brought in must be UNLOADED and placed in a plastic bag, paper bag, or a box
When and where will the Gun Buyback be held?
The event will be held on Saturday, April 30th from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM at the Andy Murphy Midtown Neighborhood Center on 467 Broadway in Kingston, NY 12401. If you can't make that date you can arrange a pickup time with the Ulster County Sheriff's Office (845-802-7960) from April 23-29th.
What do you receive in exchange for a gun?
Here's a little breakdown of what will happen and more information is on the Ulster County Sheriff's Facebook Page:
- Assault Rifle- $300 in the form of a pre-paid gift card on site
- Handgun- $150 and an additional $150 Walmart gift card for good condition and working semi-automatic handguns 9mm or larger caliber
- Rifle or Shotgun- $75
- Non-working replica or antique gun- $25
Other details:
This is pretty cool, you can be eligible to get a free gun safe if you show a valid pistol permit. However, there is a limit of one per household and it's on a first come first serve basis.
