Data: 126,000 People Bolted New York in 2020

Maybe it's the taxes, maybe it's the weather or maybe it's just because there seems to be more opportunity and better living elsewhere.  But the data isn't good for the Empire State.  In newly released information about what states people are leaving the most, more people are escaping from New York than anywhere else.

It's not exactly clear how many of these people were from the Capital region, but according to a report from News 10 ABC,  between July 2019 and July 2020, more people have left the state of New York than any other state in the country. Illinois and Hawaii were number 2 and 3 on the list respectively.

According to the data, the steady decline in New York's population has been happening every year since 2015, and the numbers this past year were far and away the largest in the country.  Over 126,000 New Yorkers left the state from July 2019 to July 2020, and according to the report, that represents a .65 decrease in total population.

Where is everyone going and why?

Is it the high taxes? Could it be better jobs and more income opportunity somewhere else?  Could it be the weather? While it's not exactly cut and dry as to why people are leaving, you might be able to venture a guess as to what's partly to blame.

While taxes and job opportunities may contribute to the decline, weather is obviously a key contributor as it's being reported that in the last ten years, 1 in 5 New Yorkers who have left the state migrated south to Florida.
