I was instantly intrigued when I discovered what this town was first purchased for in the 1670's. Discover Saugerties explained,
"It was purchased from the Esopus Sachem Tribe in 1677 by Governor Edmund Andros for a piece of cloth, a shirt, a loaf of bread and maize. "
After learning this information about Saugerties, NY and what it was purchased for in 1677, it puts it into perspective of how fortunate we are in 2024 for what we have. Our ancestors have paved the way for us to experience what is available to us in Hudson Valley.
Discover Saugerties mentioned that a man named Barent Cornelis Volge was known as "the little sawyer" who was one of this town's earliest settlers. This Ulster County, NY town's name came from this man who played a role in settling the area before any of the residents.

I've been to Saugerties, NY many times. In the warmer months, I enjoy visiting Opus 40 which is a unique sculpture park with walking trails and more.
The Saugerties Lighthouse has a relaxing nature walk to explore before arriving at the lighthouse. There are signs near the lighthouse that share stories of its past.
There are plenty of shops, local businesses to explore on Saugerties, NY's streets including Main and Partition. Some of the locally owned boutiques and eateries on these streets have been there for many years including Montano's Shoe Store and more.
