The other day I was on my normal walk and I noticed a few people hovering near one of the big trees I usually pass. I went to over to see what was going on and instantly noticed a huge shape that was attached to a tree. Okay....we all know nature, I was a Girl Scout and I haven't lived under a rock so I'm used to the wilderness. but something about this looked very different.

What mystery figure was recently found on a tree in the Hudson Valley?

There are a lot of bees near me so my mind went straight to that. However, this shape was a much lighter color compared to the nests I've seen before. Also, on most bees nests I've seen you can see the honey comb lines and this had none of that. It looked like someone sprayed spray foam on the tree and it just stuck. Now that I really look at it, it kinda looks like someone glued Mr. Peanut to a tree ha ha.

I did a little digging and saw that bees do commonly make nests in trees.. It really can depend on where you live when it comes to what kind of bee made the nest. Most bee species usually make their nests in the ground, but a handful of them do make them in trees.

If you're one of the lucky people who also has a bee issue, there are some tips and suggestions on what to do if you find one of these nests in your yard.

Here's what's suggested by a professional:

  • Keep all people and pets who are allergic to bees away from the area
  • Avoid using spray insecticides or traps- if they aren't successful you could have a ton of angry bees
  • Give the bees space and avoid the area if possible
  • If all else fails, call a professional to help you out

What kind of bee do you think this nest belongs to? Or is it a wasp nest? Share your answers with us on the station app.
