7-Eleven Closing Hundreds of Stores

7-Eleven has announced plans to close a whopping 645 locations during its 2026 fiscal year, which began on March 1, 2026, and runs through February 28, 2027, according to the New York Post.

The news came during a recent earnings call, where company president Stan Reynolds told investors that the closures are part of a larger plan to reshape the brand moving forward. In simple terms, underperforming stores will be phased out while the company shifts its focus to a newer, more modern concept.

That new concept is being described as “food-forward,” meaning stores will lean much more into prepared meals, drinks, and an overall better in-store experience. Think less quick stop for a snack and more of a place where you can actually grab a decent meal on the go.

Reynolds said those updated stores are already seeing results, with sales per store running about 18% higher than the company average, and because of that, 7-Eleven plans to keep building on that model moving forward.

What Stores Are Closing?

The company didn't say which stores would be closing, but did say it's all part of what the company called “portfolio optimization”, which basically means cutting stores that aren’t performing well.

Not All Bad News

While closing over 600 locations might sound alarming, it’s not all bad news.

At the same time, 7-Eleven says it’s planning to open 205 new stores across the country by the end of February 2027. Many of those locations will feature the new “food-forward” design, with larger spaces, expanded food and beverage options, and a wider selection of products.

Right now, it’s unclear where those new stores will be built or if the closures will impact any New York locations.

As more details are released, we’ll keep you updated.
