New York, with its bustling cities and stunning lakes, has its own legendary lake monster – Champ. Yeah, you heard right. This is the tale of a creature that’s been making waves in Lake Champlain for centuries.

The Creepiest Mythical Creatures from Each US State

The History Show compiled a list of each of the US States' creepiest mythical creatures! Many of which you've probably heard of like the Jersey Devil, Skinwalkers, Mothman and many others. But let's dive into the history of Champ, New York's urban legend!

The Legend of Champ the Lake Monster

The legend of Champ dates back to the Native American tribes who lived around Lake Champlain long before European settlers arrived. The Iroquois and Abenaki tribes spoke of a large, serpent-like creature inhabiting the lake, referring to it as "Tatoskok." The legend persisted, but it wasn’t until the early 1800s that the story of Champ really took off.

The first recorded sighting of Champ was in 1819, when a captain named Crum claimed he saw a black monster, about 187 feet long, with a head like a seahorse, rearing out of the lake. Over the years, more and more people reported seeing a similar creature. Descriptions varied, but most agreed that Champ was a long, serpentine beast with humps and a head resembling a snake or a dinosaur. Imagine enjoying a serene day on the lake and spotting something huge and mysterious breaking the surface.

One of the most famous sightings occurred in 1977, when Sandra Mansi snapped a photograph of what appeared to be a long-necked creature rising from the lake. The photo sparked a media frenzy and remains one of the most compelling pieces of evidence supporting the existence of Champ. Even though some skeptics dismiss it as a hoax or a misidentified object, believers hold it up as proof that something unusual lurks beneath the waters of Lake Champlain.

Champ fever has gripped the region for years, drawing tourists and cryptid enthusiasts to the lake. Local businesses have embraced the legend, with Champ-themed boat tours, souvenirs, and even a minor league baseball team named the Vermont Lake Monsters, which plays near the lake. Champ has become a beloved local mascot, adding a touch of mystery and magic to the area.

Lake Champlain's deep, dark waters continue to fuel speculation about what might be hiding beneath. Some researchers suggest that Champ could be a remnant of an ancient species, perhaps a plesiosaur or a giant eel. Others think it could be a large sturgeon or an unknown type of fish. Whatever the case, the mystery of Champ remains unsolved, captivating the imaginations of locals and visitors alike.

So, if you find yourself on the shores of Lake Champlain, keep your camera ready. You never know when Champ might decide to make an appearance. Whether you believe in the legend or not, the story of Champ adds an exciting and intriguing twist to the natural beauty of New York’s lakes.
