Popular Kingston, New York Taqueria Announces Closure

A sudden announcement from a popular Ulster County 'taqueria' on May 2nd has many in the area feeling quite sad. After establishing themselves within the community more than a decade ago, this well-loved restaurant has now closed its doors.

Delicious Food, Good Music, Great Vibes

Passionately known as the 'love child of dream chasers' Elena and Isaac Cruz, owners of Diego's Taqueria in Kingston, way back when they sought out the perfect location to create a place in their community that 'embodied everything they love about life: delicious food, good music, and great vibes.'

38 John Street in Kingston became that location for the Cruz family, and home to Diego's Taqueria for a decade. They even had a second location for some time as well.

They were able to create a space for their customers that felt like home, serving up street-style tacos, but in their own unique (and delicious way).

Diego's Taqueria Announces Closure

An announcement posted on the social media pages for Diego's on May 2nd came as a surprise to many:

we have reached a point where the decision has been made for us. We are working on determining what our last day of service can be and will announce it soon

'Soon' happened much sooner than some anticipated, with Diego's officially closing at 38 John Street on May 4th, with their 'last call.'

Citing the hard blow that the pandemic served them, Diego's indicated that they've been struggling to recover, like many other businesses can relate to.

Call it stubborn, call it passion, call it stupid, we held on for as long as we could. But with costs and general overhead doubling and even tripling in some instances over the last few years...

This Isn't The Last You'll See of Diego's

Thankfully, for fans of this unique take on street-taco fare, you'll see them in and around the community while they figure out their next steps. The team at Diego's has indicated that they will be vendors at a number of Opus 40 events this summer, and will offer private catering opportunities as well.

Though the storefront has closed, Diego's website and social media will remain active, and that is where people will be able to find out where they're serving, and also inquire about catering.

There's even talk of a food truck or trailer.
