We have officially entered into the season of seeing more snow plows on the road here in New York State. We've already had our first snowfall and may have noticed snow plows taking care of the roads for drivers.

The New York State Thruway Authority made an announcement of something new that we can expect to see on their snow plows this season.

First, we should take a look into what these lines on New York state roads mean.

What Do These Lines On New York State Roads Mean?

The New York State Department Of Transportation shared helpful information on their social media describing what certain lines on our roads can mean.

They included,

"Have you noticed these lines on NY roadways before some winter storms? "

"This is called “salt brine” and before some storms, our crews place brine on roadways to prevent ice and snow from sticking."

I would see those lines in the road as crews would prepare for a winter storm. At the time, I didn't know what they meant until I saw this post on social media.

So, we all understand the "salt brine" lines on roads in our area. Now, we can dive into exploring the meaning behind new green lights on snow plows this season in New York state.

Here's What It Means When You See A Green Light On Snow Plows In New York State

The New York State Thruway Authority made a post on social media sharing information about their snow plows for 2024.

They explained,

"NEW this winter, Thruway plow trucks will be equipped with GREEN lights, complementing the standard amber hazard lights."

The New York State Thruway Authority shared that they have more than 250 "heavy-duty plow trucks" that now have these lights. So, what do these lights do? And is there anything drivers need to do when they see them?

"Green lights improve visibility and safety during winter operations, particularly in low-light conditions and poor weather."

I haven't noticed the green lights on snow plows in our area just yet but the next time that I see one, I'll know what it means.
