This fan favorite TV show has been one of my favorites since I was a kid. I’ve always watched it during the Fourth of July weekend and during New Years Eve when they have the marathons.

This show first aired in the late 1950’s and we still look forward to seeing it today.

Where Did This TV Show Creator Grow Up In New York State?

The Twilight Zone was created by Rod Serling. He was also the writer, presenter and host of this popular TV series. Fans of the Twilight Zone would explain this show as fantasy but also bringing in some drama and comedy as well. I love the lessons behind each episode and the different perspective that it brings to its viewers.

The Rod Serling Archive mentioned that Rod Serling was born in upstate New York in Syracuse and he later moved to Binghamton with his family. Before Rod Serling was on the big screen, they included that he served in the military, went to college in Ohio and then worked in New York City.

Serling went into television and writing which led him to create the Twilight Zone!

This Upstate New York Town Inspired A Popular Twilight Zone Episode

I had the opportunity to visit this town in upstate New York, in the Binghamton area.

Atlas Obscura explained that one of  Rod Serling’s episodes was inspired from the town where he grew up.

"Walking Distance"  is one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes.

This episode is about a man who witnessed himself at a younger age carving his name onto a gazebo at a park with a carousel.

Atlas Obscura also shared that the gazebo and carousel in Binghamton, NY inspired Serling to create the "Walking Distance" episode.

They stated that,

"The setting of the story is based on a real carousel that has been in continuous operation since 1925 in Recreation Park in Binghamton, New York, where the visionary creator of the famous television series grew up."

Of course, I had to visit this iconic area where Serling got the idea of this episode from. Visitors can stop by Recreation Park in Binghamton to learn more about this iconic piece of history.

These Twilight Zone Episodes Mention Popular New York State Towns

I love watching the Twilight Zone episode and seeing when they mention New York state towns that we know and love.

During the Mirror Image episode, the actors talk about Cortland, NY. In the Midnight Sun episode which is another one of my favorites, they talk about Ithaca and Syracuse, NY.

In The Odyssey of Flight 33 episode of the Twilight Zone, they make a lot of references to New York state, especially to the New York World’s Fair.

Fan Favorite Twilight Zone Epsiode Mentions New York State Airport

Sometimes when you watch something for the first time, you may not pick up on everything they include. I’ve watched the Twilight Zone episodes for several years and always seem to learn something new from them.

At times, I also see a different perspective of an episode. In The Odyssey of Flight 33 episode of the Twilight Zone, they not only mention the New York World’s Fair but other landmarks as well.

The crew on this flight and the pilot are confused as to why they try to land in certain areas but it appears to be a different period in time. It’s almost as if they took a step back in time during this episode.

The pilot mentions Idlewild Airport which was the original name of JFK Airport in New York City.

They also mentioned LaGuardia Airport several times in this Twilight Zone episode and it’s something that I may have not noticed before. The pilot is trying to land at LaGuardia but they claim that it’s too short for their plane.

If you feel like binge watching a fun, fantasy filled show filled with curiosity, I recommend the Twilight Zone! There’s nothing quite like this iconic TV show and I look forward to watching it when it’s on!
