Time to Celebrate! Free Earth Day Event at New York’s Newest State Park
What better way to celebrate Earth Day than with a free event at New York's newest State Park right here in the Hudson Valley?
Sojourner Truth State Park in Kingston, NY
Even cooler, Sojourner Truth State Park is the first state park in Kingston, NY. Growing up in Ulster County, Kingston was our "big city" destination for shopping, eating, and even buying my first car. To be able to add a state park to its resume is beyond impressive. To celebrate the grand opening and just in time for Earth Day, there's a free event happening this Saturday.
There couldn't be a more appropriate person to honor with the park naming, either. Sojourner Truth was born in Esopus in present-day Ulster County and led one of the most remarkable lives in American history. From the governor's office:
[Sojourner Truth] became one of the nation's leading voices for abolition and universal suffrage in the mid-19th century. During the Civil War, she recruited men for the Union Army, and worked for the Freedmen’s Bureau, an agency that assisted the newly freed enslaved.
So come celebrate an American legend and our planet on Saturday. Here's what to expect:
Earth Day at Sojourner Truth State Park
Earth Day was started over 50 years ago in the United States but has since spread to over 190 countries. The new Sojourner Truth State Park will open on Saturday, April 23rd at 11am, with festivities continuing until 2pm. Entry is free, and Earth Day activities will include vendors serving lunch, music, and of course the first opportunity to check out New York's newest state park.
