If you haven't heard, I am a fan of old things. I get my love of antiques from my Mom and my love of old buildings from my Grandpa, who was an architect. Both of those people are who I credit for the fact that I can't pass up an item from the past.

Storm King Theater in Cornwall-on-Hudson to be Restored

Growing up in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, there was an old building in the center of town that I knew was an old theater, but by the time I lived there, it no longer showed films, held live theater, or music performances. To me, the Storm King Theater was just a great old building on the corner.

According to the theater's current online home, stormkingtheater.com, the original theater accommodated 600 people and replaced a theater that had been torn down in 1934. The Storm King Theater reportedly opened in 1935. The site also mentions that the doors closed in the 1990s.

I am not sure why I don't have a memory of the theater being open when I was a kid; it was open, but obviously, I never got there until the early 1990s when it was used for auctions. Yes, back to my antique obsession. I can remember sitting in the old theater and bidding on goodies.

More recently, I know that the theater had been converted into a market offering fresh food. I am not clear as to when that closed. However, there is a restaurant still located next to the Theater, the Storm King Restaurant and Lounge.

The Hudson Valley Has A Wealth of Small Community Theaters

The Hudson Valley is dotted with various small theaters that offer audiences the chance to enjoy live and recorded performances up close in what I call specialty settings. Some are old-style theaters, much like Storm King. The Rosendale Theater in Rosendale, New York, is a prime example.

Some others are new and cutting edge in design, like the DENIZEN in New Paltz. It was designed as a black box theatre for both live and recorded performances, offering its audience an immersive experience.

So I guess we will get to welcome back another iconic theater soon. You can read more about the efforts to restore the Storm King Theater here.
