Shandaken Named Most Hospitable Town in New York
According to the folks at World Atlas, the Town of Shandaken has officially been named the most hospitable town in all of New York State, and if you’ve ever visited, this probably doesn’t come as a surprise.
Located in Ulster County, Shandaken isn’t just one place. It’s made up of 12 unique hamlets, including Phoenicia, Pine Hill, Big Indian, Woodland Valley, and others. Each one brings something different to the table, but they all share that same welcoming, laid-back Catskills vibe.
Why Shandaken Stands Out
At the heart of it all is Phoenicia, the town’s largest hamlet and a go-to spot for visitors year-round. Visitors interested in learning a bit of history can visit the Empire State Railway Museum and relive the history of the Ulster and Delaware Railroad. In the warmer months, you can ride the original rails along the Espous Creek on Rail Explorers pedal cars.
Phoenicia is also home to the Phoenicia Film Festival and offers access to Slide Mountain, the highest peak in the Catskills (4,180 feet).
