A popular clothing chain will buck the online trend by finally opening a Capital Region location this summer.

According to a Times Union report, Urban Outfitters is planning on setting up a brick and mortar location at Crossgates Mall and will open sometime this summer. Rumors had been swirling over the years they would open a location in Saratoga Springs, but the Times Union says they will instead set up shop in the Guilderland mall across from the Apple store. Urban Outiffers describes their stores as "a unique retail experience and community center for creative, college-age customers" and they feature men's and women's clothing, along with home goods, beauty products, and music.

As you can imagine, Crossgates Marketing Director Jen Smith told the Times Union the mall is "thrillled" by this news as this new location will certainly be a traffic driver. This is also great news for local shoppers as over the last few years brick and mortar clothing stores have seen some attrition. As someone who has to try on any piece of clothing I wear, I never understood how people could order clothes online. Yes, it is easy these days to return the items that do not fit, but it is still an extra step and one you can take many times before finding the attire that fits.

Urban Outfitters will be the second high profile store opening of the year for Crossgates. The mall recently celebrated the opening a new Amazon store as well. Could more brick and mortar retail establishments be the trend of the new year? After doing all of our shopping indoors for the last 12 months during the pandemic, maybe there will be a big shift back to in person shopping as COVID fades?
