
Why New York Chose This Tree As Its Official State Symbol
There is so much natural beauty within New York State. Here in the Hudson Valley, we have all that we could ever want. The Catskill Mountains offer serene landscapes with lakes, forests and more. I love seeing the countryside with rolling green hills with blossoming flowers over the past couple of days.
We can explore nature by visiting local hiking trails, waterfalls and more. Visiting upstate New York is also peaceful and exciting to see the even more natural locations including the Watkins Glen area.
What Tree Is The Official State Symbol Of New York?
When it comes to trees within New York State, we may know some familiar ones. From elm, to hemlock and pine, there’s always an abundance for us to see. I was excited to learn that the Sugar Maple is actually the tree which symbolizes New York State!
According to State Symbols USA, they shared that the sugar maple is the official state tree of New York which happened in the 1950s! They also included that the sugar maple is not only the state tree in New York. Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin also call the sugar maple their state tree as well.
This still makes it special within New York state for many reasons!
Why New York Chose This Tree As Its Official State Symbol
The sugar maple has a purpose for us within New York State. It allows us to enjoy Fall in many ways. State Symbols USA also included that the sap from the sugar maple trees is used to make the delicious maple that we know and love.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation included that the sugar maple has other purposes including being a high grade wood that can be used for furniture, flooring and more!
How Does The Hudson Valley Highlight The Sugar Maple Tree?
There are always fun fall events in New York State that celebrate sugar maple trees and the production of maple syrup at local businesses.
The Catskill Mountain Sugar House allows us to try locally made syrup and hosts educational events as well.
The Hudson Highlands Nature is also a place that we can go to enjoy maple sugar tours in the winter as well. During this season, we may even see buckets on trees that are part of the process of maple sugaring within New York State.
