Thursday We Shout Out Military Brats

I am the proud member of a not so exclusive group of people. However, it is a group that is very proud and I like to think is "thick as thieves". Myself like a handful of my friends, had the honor of growing up a Military Brat. More nicely phrased I am dependent of someone who served in the US Army.

I am bringing this to light this week because Thursday is National Military Brats Day. A day set aside on the calendar starting in 2016 for all of us who get to proudly declare that at least one of our parents served in the military. According to the National Days Calendar Military Brats are actually 1 in every 25 Americans. This means you most likely know someone whose in the club.

It is really cool to be a Military Brat. I got to be an Army Brat thanks to my Dad. He graduated from West Point in 1961. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and his military career spanned 25 years. He is the reason I went to places like London, Singapore and Indonesia. He is the reason I have lived in California, Kansas, Washington DC and Washington state. We traveled a lot. We met people from all over the world. And I enjoyed all of it even through we rarely stay in a place more than 2 years.

So this week I am going to take the time to reach out to my Brat network because yes we do keep in touch as grown up. There is a bond you share when you grow up with a military parent. Maybe it is because we all lived on base which was like giant neighborhood. Another reason may be that our parent who served was away from home a lot and it felt good to have a friend who was living the same way. Whatever the reason I am glad I got to spend my childhood constantly meeting new people and see new places. How does that saying go "Make new friends, but keep the old one is silver and the other's gold". Corny I know but so true.
