Materials Matter When You Make A Sturdy Outdoor Cat Shelter
I recently saw a warning about making a winter home for feral cats with the wrong materials, and it got me thinking, why is it that cats can be out there living on their own, but you rarely hear about a dog? Cats must truly like their independence, I guess.
Reality is, I would think a feral dog would be hanging out with the Hudson Valley's coyote population. Coy-dogs are real. But it is also more likely that man's best friend shows up on someone's doorstep and then either stay or end up at a shelter for adoption. Stray cats can be much more savvy and independent.
Facts About Feral Cats in New York State
Feral cats in New York are still considered companion animals, and as such, there are laws protecting them. There are also catch-and-release programs to help monitor the population and to get feral cats vaccinated. But you should know if you are feeding a cat who appears to be feral, that cat can be considered yours, therefore making you responsible. If you have concerns about a stray cat, you should alert authorities so they can take action.
Stray cats will often make themselves at home near your house, but do not expect you to invite them in; they would rather rough it. This has led to us soft-hearted humans creating space for them outside that can protect them from the elements during winter. Many people I know put out shelters in the winter for feral cats.
Never Use This Material In An Outdoor Cat Shelter
If you are planning to do this because you have a cat that visits but does not want a permanent home, it is important that you use the correct materials. I guess one of the mistakes people make is with the bedding. It is super important that you get the right kind.
A lot of people use straw, and they apparently make the mistake of getting crafting straw, which, due to its consistency, would not be warm enough. According to a post on Facebook from Cat Crew Rescue, we should never use craft straw.
Most of the craft straws are crushed/shredded and therefore don’t have the insulating properties needed. Other craft straws are bleached, others have a tacking substance that makes it sticky. It is not optimum for the purpose needed. (Cat Crew Rescue via Facebook)
