How Do Potholes Form?

Every year, many of us wonder how there can be so many potholes on our roads? Experts say that potholes are caused by the expansion and contraction of ground water after the water has entered into the ground under the pavement.

When it freezes, it expands and when it melts, the pavement contracts and leaves gaps in the surface under the pavement, where water can get in. If the water freezes and thaws over and over, the pavement will weaken and continue cracking.

More Traffic Leads to More Potholes

While this happens, add in the weight of cars and trucks driving over the weak spot in the road, and it begins to break down, leading to pieces of the roadway to be displaced, which creates the pothole. It gets even worse when salt is used on roads because it creates a freeze-thaw cycle leading to the cycle above repeating itself according to a prominent County Engineer.
