As spring approaches, there are a bunch of things that many of us are expecting over the next couple of weeks and months. There will be longer days and warmer temperatures, all things we are excited for, but one thing none of us are expecting is a hefty car repair bill.

Most of us understand that this time of year, which many refer to as "pothole season", there are going to be more potholes on roads we drive on than before because of a freezing winter filled with precipitation.

When it freezes, it expands and when it melts, the pavement contracts and leaves gaps in the surface under the pavement, where water can get in. If the water freezes and thaws over and over, the pavement will weaken and continue cracking.

More Traffic Leads to More Potholes

While this happens, add in the weight of cars and trucks driving over the weak spot in the road, and it begins to break down, leading to pieces of the roadway to be displaced, which creates the pothole. It gets even worse when salt is used on roads because it creates a freeze-thaw cycle leading to the cycle above repeating itself according to a prominent County Engineer.
