It happened in the early morning hours of June 27 on Main Street in Wappingers Falls when police responded to a 911 call reporting a suicidal person.

Upon arrival, police said the teenager, Oscar Granados Colindres, was seated on the railing of the Wappingers Falls Creek Bridge as officers attempted to speak with him.

What Happened in the Village of Wappingers

According to the New York Attorney General's Office, officers encountered Colindres on the ledge of the bridge with a knife in his hand.

Officers spent approximately 50 minutes attempting to speak with him and get him to come down safely.

The situation eventually escalated.

According to the Attorney General's Office, Colindres stood up and allegedly ran toward at least one officer while holding the knife, leading multiple officers to fire their service weapons and strike him.

Disturbing Body Cam Footage Released

The newly released body camera footage, which the Attorney General's Office warns is disturbing, shows officers firing shots as Colindres moves toward them. Colindres was shot several times and fell face down onto the pavement.

It remains unclear from the released footage which officers fired the shots that struck Colindres, as several officers had their weapons drawn.

Colindres was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Shooting Under Investigation

The Attorney General's Office is now investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, the Office of Special Investigation reviews incidents in which a police officer or peace officer may have caused someone's death. If OSI determines that an officer may have caused the death, the office conducts a full investigation.

The footage released by OSI comes from body-worn cameras worn by three State Police troopers, a Dutchess County sheriff's deputy and a Village of Wappingers Falls police officer, according to the Attorney General's Office.

Why Was the Video Released?

Attorney General Letitia James directed OSI to release camera footage obtained during its investigations in an effort to increase transparency and strengthen public trust.

The Attorney General's Office emphasizes that releasing the footage does not represent a conclusion about whether any person involved committed a crime.

The office says the release is not an expression of an opinion regarding the guilt or innocence of any party, nor does it indicate whether or how anyone may ultimately be charged.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
