Illegal Cannabis Sales in New York
Last week, the OCM announced it had begun an investigation into illegal cannabis sales at stores across New York after receiving multiple reports from concerned community members that they were selling illicit cannabis products and marketing them to individuals under 21.
Convenience Store Shut Down in Saugerties, NY
One of the stores under investigation was the Saugerties Convenience Store, located at 72 Partition Street in Saugerties, NY.
According to the OCM, investigators arrived at the Ulster County store on November 24th, 2025, and confirmed that the location was selling cannabis items without a license and was also advertising its products to underage customers.
Officials seized the illegal products and closed the store, which had only been open for about a week, according to an OCM press release.
This isn't the first store to be closed by the OCM in the Hudson Valley, NY.
Smoke Shop Shut Down in Red Hook, NY
Earlier this month, the OCM, along with the Red Hook Police Department, closed down Red Hook Exotics located at 7484 South Broadway in the Village of Red Hook, NY.
The Red Hook shop was closed after authorities discovered and seized numerous illegal cannabis products, including cannabis flower, edibles, and concentrates. Police said that some of the products seized included untested products from out of state, and that some of them had extremely high levels of THC, including one brand of edibles containing 5000mg of THC.
Stores Selling Cannabis Without a License Won't Be Tolerated in New York
Following the closure, Daniel Haughney, Director of Enforcement and Investigations at the New York State Office of Cannabis Management, reiterated that New York will not tolerate illegal cannabis sales, saying,
"OCM’s Enforcement Team is working across the state to make sure the law is followed and that only licensed businesses are allowed to sell cannabis products. This ensures that the public is buying safer, tested products that meet New York State standards. The inspection in Red Hook led to an order to seal an unlicensed location — a clear reminder that illegal activity will not be tolerated in New York."
The OCM is committed to protecting communities, supporting compliant businesses, and helping grow the industry in the right way.
