Popular Trail Within Minnewaska State Park Preserve Closed

In a statement posted to the Minnewaska State Park Preserve website, The Lake Awosting Carriage Road will be closed until further notice.

The statement goes on to say it is closed "to all users seven days a week, from March 2025 until further notice."

So why is the trail closed? Parks staff explains on the website it's for the safety of visitors/hikers" as contractor work poses a potential danger to visitors."

The Lower Awosting Carriage road is going to be used for transporting materials and is the "designated access for construction equipment." However, the northern section of Lake Awosting Carriage Road will be open during the on going construction project.

Winter Closures At Minnewaska

Throughout the winter months other trails are closed within Minnewaska including Gertrude's Nose, Millbrook Mountain and Story Kill Footpaths.

The aforementioned trails reopened on March 8th, 2025. As we still navigate through the Hudson Valley cold weather, Minnewaska warns that there is still ice on the trail.

A statement recommends all visitors bring the appropriate footwear and use "microspikes or other traction devices and use caution when hiking in the park preserve while icy conditions persist. Sneakers are not recommended."

Then, later this Spring the Ice Caves trail will reopen.
