New Yorkers Warned Of Moose Sightings in Early Fall

Back right around the first day of Fall in September 2024, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation published a warning for New Yorkers. While moose sightings are rare in New York, they can happen and it can be dangerous.

At that time the DEC wrote that if you do come in contact with a moose it's "best to give them plenty of space and observe only from a safe distance or from shelter if it's available."

The DEC goes on to add that moose are "secretive animals" stating they can be "unpredictable and potentially dangerous."

Is This The First Hudson Valley Moose Sighting in 2024?

While scrolling social media earlier this week I came across these amazing photos of a moose spotted in Columbia County.

Daniel Sheeley, the photo poster, tells us he saw the moose around 8:52 am in Ancramdale, New York on Sunday October 20th, 2024.

From what we gather, when there have been moose sightings in the region it's usually around late September through October.

If you see a moose in the near future the DEC recommends (besides giving them their space) filling out a DEC Moose Sighting Report. The data collected from these reports will be used to help New York State create a moose management plan. .

While it's not officially data, we've seen and heard of more and more moose encounters in the area.
