Hudson Valley Restaurant Legend Announces Closure of Popular Restaurant

A familiar name in the Hudson Valley restaurant scene is getting ready to close the doors on one of his longtime restaurants, and this time, it’s because he needs to put his health first.

If you've spent any time around the Hudson Valley, chances are you've heard the name Frank Guido. For more than six decades, Guido has been a major part of the local restaurant scene, owning and operating 26 different restaurants throughout the Hudson Valley. Now, he says it's time to slow things down.

Unfortunately, Guido has announced that he will be closing his Port of Call restaurant in Catskill after revealing that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer.

Guido, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments in New York City, told the Daily Freeman that he simply can't keep doing everything he has been doing while focusing on his health.

“I just can’t do it anymore,” Guido said. “I need to concentrate on my health. It’s time we closed down a little.”

Port of Call, located at 7 Main St. in Catskill, has been a part of the Catskill community for nearly three decades. Guido purchased the restaurant 27 years ago, and it has already survived one major setback.

The restaurant was destroyed by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011. Soon after, Guido rebuilt the restaurant, and it reopened in 2012.

Now, the restaurant is once again entering a new chapter.

Guido said he expects to complete the sale of Port of Call on September 30, with the restaurant expected to reopen under new ownership on October 1.

Guido, who grew up in East Kingston, got into the restaurant business shortly after graduating from Marist College. His restaurant career spans more than 60 years, with more than two dozen restaurants along the way.

His restaurants have become familiar destinations for people throughout the Hudson Valley, particularly those looking for Italian and seafood.

While Port of Call will soon have a new owner, Guido's name will continue to be part of the local restaurant scene. Frank Guido’s Little Italy in Kingston, operated by his son Mark, will remain open, as will Mariner’s Harbor in Kingston, which Guido previously sold to his cousin Sal Guido.
