Newburgh Detective Promoted to Sergeant Days After His Death

A Hudson Valley police detective has been posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant, honoring a career dedicated to serving the Town of Newburgh and the surrounding community.

Earlier this week, we learned that Town of Newburgh Detective Christopher Michael Thompson tragically died on Saturday at the age of 35. He served with the Town of Newburgh Police Department since 2017 and previously worked with the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the Town of Wallkill Police Department.

Details surrounding his passing are still unclear, but one thing is clear. He has been formally promoted.

According to Scott Manley, the Deputy Supervisor and Town Councilman for the Town of Newburgh, the Town Board has issued a proclamation honoring Detective Christopher Michael Thompson and formally promoting him to the rank of sergeant following his death.

Thompson was born May 6, 1991, in Middletown, NY, and was a longtime area resident who previously lived in Minisink. He was known as “Chris” to his family and friends.

During his career with the Town of Newburgh Police Department, Thompson served in numerous roles and became a valued member of several specialized units.

He served in the Patrol Division and was a K-9 handler with the department's K-9 Unit. He was also an active firearms instructor with the Firearms Unit, a General Topics Instructor, and a team leader on the department's Tactical Unit. Most recently, Thompson served as an investigator in the Detective Bureau.

The proclamation also highlighted Thompson's life outside of law enforcement. He enjoyed going to the gym, spending time outdoors, kayaking, and cars, especially his beloved Corvette. He also enjoyed dressing well, reading and playing video games.

The Town Board said Thompson always strived to grow both personally and professionally.

Sergeant Thompson Remembered

The Town of Newburgh Police Department also released a statement following his death. “Detective Thompson’s dedication to his profession, his fellow officers, and the community he served will not be forgotten. His loss is deeply felt throughout our Department and the entire law enforcement community,” the department stated.

On August 10, 2026, the Town of Newburgh Town Board, “on behalf of a grateful public,” formally promoted Thompson to the rank of sergeant.

While the promotion comes after his death, it serves as a lasting tribute to Thompson's years of service and the impact he had on his fellow officers and the community he served.
