Post Office Employee Stabbed Multiple Times in the Hudson Valley

A disturbing scene unfolded at a Hudson Valley post office Thursday afternoon after an employee was stabbed multiple times, prompting a large police response and the temporary closure of a busy road in Putnam County.

According to the Carmel Police Department, it all started at approximately 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, when officers and deputies from the Putnam County Sheriff's Office were called to respond to a disturbance at the United States Post Office on Fair Street in the hamlet of Carmel, NY.

What initially came in as a disturbance quickly escalated as dispatchers advised those responding that an assault had occurred and that the victim had suffered multiple stab wounds.

Deputies with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office were reportedly on the scene almost immediately and encountered the assault still in progress. Authorities say deputies deployed a taser and were able to take the suspect into custody without any further incident.

Police said the victim, who is an employee at the post office, was driven by private vehicle to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, officials say the victim's injuries are considered non-life-threatening.

Investigators believe the suspect and the victim knew each other, and at this time, police say the stabbing appears to have been an isolated incident. Authorities also emphasized that there is no known ongoing threat to the community.

As detectives processed the scene, Fair Street between Route 52 and Vink Drive remained closed for approximately two hours while investigators collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.

The investigation is now being handled by detectives with the Carmel Police Department, with assistance from the Putnam County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

As of Friday morning, the suspect remained in custody, and criminal charges were still pending. Police have not yet released the identities of either the suspect or the victim, and officials say more information will be made public as the investigation continues.
