It's time to get ready for one of the most exciting invasions of the year... hummingbirds are coming back to New York State!

While the term "invasion" usually isn't associated with something positive, the return of migrating animals is always exciting. First, tens of thousands of eels made their appearance in the Hudson Valley... now it's time for tiny birds.

Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds Returning to New York State

While there are countless species of hummingbirds, New Yorkers are only likely to see one: the ruby-throated hummingbird. These creatures might be dainty, but their migration journey is wildly impressive.

Hummingbird Migration to New York

Hummingbirds can fly for over 500 miles in a single day as they travel from their warm migration grounds in the southern US and Central America back to New York State where they will find a mate and breed. But when can New Yorkers expect them in their backyards?

When Will Hummingbirds Return to New York State?

According to Hummingbird Central, which tracks hummingbird migrations across the country, the first New York hummingbird sighting was on April 16th 2025 in Cortlandt Manor, NY (below). That means it's time to prep hummingbird feeders for the season. Here's how:

Plant These Flowers to Attract Hummingbirds

To "naturally" feed hummingbirds, New Yorkers are encouraged to plant trumpet or tube-shaped flowers like hosta, zinnia, or delphinium, with red flowers being their highest preference. Hummingbird feeders are a great option as well.

How to Make Hummingbird Nectar for Your Feeder

Making hummingbird "nectar" is as easy as making sugar water and pouring it into a hummingbird feeder. The NYS DEC recommends a ratio of 4:1 (or one cup of water for each 1/4 cup of sugar) to initially attract the hummingbirds, and reducing the ratio to 1:5 once they begin to visit.
