Firefighters in Hudson, NY were called to a residential home on Monday night after an unexpected fire erupted in their backyard.

Recently, several common items have been put in the spotlight for the serious harm they could accidentally cause. While one can be a fire hazard (as was shown recently in Hudson), another is a potential trap for local wildlife.

One such item can be found in the yards of anyone with athletes in the family: soccer nets. From birds and cats to bears and deer, these nets can unfortunately catch more than just soccer balls, as a 2024 rescue video shows below.

Hot Tub Fire in Columbia County, NY

Another potential danger is a little less straightforward. The recent call in Claverack, NY was regarding a backyard hot tub that had erupted into flames.

City of Hudson Fire Department Responds to Hot Tub Fire

"Hudson Truck 32 was dispatched for a hot tub on fire endangering exposures at 221 Stottville Rd in the Town of Claverack", the City of Hudson Fire Department shared on Facebook (below). There could be a few reasons for the emergency.

Potential Hot Tub Fire Dangers

While no cause has been released for the fire in Columbia county, experts share that the most likely cause could be faulty wiring. Frayed or exposed wires are always dangerous, but a nearby water source (like a hot tub), can spell disaster:

If the electrical connections are not properly installed or if the wiring becomes frayed or damaged over time, it can create a dangerous situation. Water and electricity do not mix, so any moisture that comes into contact with faulty wiring can lead to a short circuit and potential fire.

The issue can also be with the hot tub itself, as was shown with a 2018 recall of hot tubs that posed a fire risk from their UV generator. Another company issued a recall in 2024 due to an issue with the tub's water pump (below).

How Do Fireworks Get Their Colors?

Besides being a fun fact to impress your friends during the finale, knowing what makes fireworks work is a reminder of just how intertwined our daily lives are with Earth’s natural resources. Some of these minerals are considered critical commodities, meaning they’re vital to modern life and can be difficult to source.
So the next time you see a shimmering white sparkle or a deep red bloom over the Mohawk River, you’ll know: there's real science, and some pretty rare elements behind all that beauty.
It all comes down to chemistry. When fireworks are launched, metallic compounds, also called mineral elements, are heated to really hot temperatures. And as they burn, they emit specific colors of light.
The more complex the mix, the more dazzling the display.
