During the holiday season, we're busy shopping for friends, family and possibly co-workers. When we wrap our holiday gifts, we should be aware of what we can throw out and what needs to be recycled.

Unless we already have knowledge of what exactly can be recycled, it may be something that we forget to look up.

The Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency made an announcement about how to properly recycle holiday items and more. This helpful information will save us time during one of the busiest seasons of the year.

What Is The Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency?


The Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency is located in New Paltz and Kingston, NY. They explained that their mission is to,

"Promote sustainable practices & efficiently manage solid waste with a focus on resource conservation."

Also known as the UCRRA, they have two locations within Ulster County, NY. Their main office, transfer station and mrf & compost facility is located in Kingston, NY.  The Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency has an additional location in New Paltz, NY which is their second transfer station.

They also shared,

"UCRRA is a permitted solid waste facility that is regulated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation."

UCRRA Informs Residents On Important Recycling Guidelines For The Holiday Season


On Facebook, the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency made a post about recycling in the Hudson Valley during the holiday season.

They asked residents to,

"Remember to double check your local recycling guidelines before placing packaging in your recycling bin!"

After we open gifts on Christmas, what are we supposed to do with the boxes, wrapping paper, ribbons and bows?

The Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency shared that not all of the packaging is able to be properly recycled. They shared a picture of cardboard boxes, paper mailers and paper wrapping paper as holiday items that can be recycled.

Bows, styrofoam and bubble mailers are examples of items that cannot be recycled. Additional information about where to recycle items within the Hudson Valley can be found on their website.

The Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency explained that not all of the plastic containers we are are able to be recycled.

What Plastic Containers Can Be Properly Recycled In New York State?


The Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency shared additional information on their social media platforms about what we can recycle in New York state. If we visit our friends or family's house this holiday, we may bring goodies with us. Some containers cant be properly recycled.

The Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency explained,

"Remember, film plastic does not belong in your recycling bin! Instead, bring film plastic to a local grocery store or large retail outlet collection box."

They used examples such as a package of dinner rolls and olive oil bottles are items that can be recycled. However, frozen dinner containers, pumpkin pie containers and some bags that contain frozen fruit aren't always able to get recycled.
