I've never had such an adorable experience with a wild animal in my entire life, and thanks to the wet weather we're having this season in the Hudson Valley, you might get lucky too.

Recent Flooding in the Hudson Valley

"April showers bring May flowers", the famous saying goes. This year, however, it seems like the rain has overstayed its welcome. Recent flooding in Ulster County has not only closed roads, but threatened the lives of some of our tiniest creatures as well.

Baby Turtles Found in the Hudson Valley

Standing on a soggy golf course in Accord, NY, I though I was staring at a rock. Then, it twitched. Further inspection revealed that the small stone I saw was in fact the smallest painted turtle I had ever beheld (below).

Flooding Has Displaced Baby Turtles in the Hudson Valley

Flooding had transported the small reptile from its home in a nearby pond. Heavy rain had caused the water feature to overflow its banks, and when the waters finally receded, it left the tiny turtle stranded on a putting green.

Rescuing Wild Animals in New York

The golf outing eventually led to the discovery of several more equally-adorable turtles that were too far away from bodies of water to survive on their own. While it was a pleasure to help save the little babies, most Hudson Valley residents will find much larger species in need of assistance.

How to Help a Turtle in New York

In addition to baby animals, turtles of all ages are often spotted trying to cross roads in the Hudson Valley.
