
New Safety Findings After Massive Road Project in Kingston
The city of Kingston, NY in Ulster County has released new data after a massive overhaul of one of their busiest - and most dangerous - roadways.
The changes, dubbed the Broadway Streetscape Project, is just one piece of the city's new and ambitious Long Range Transportation Plan, which sets out longterm plans meant to take them into the year 2050.
Major Safety Overhauls on Broadway in Kingston, NY
The recent work on Broadway was focused on increasing safety for both drivers and pedestrians, and included a new addition of protected bike lanes as well. New data was recently released to support the changes.
The City of Kingston's Broadway Streetscape Project
The changes to Broadway between East St. James Street and East Chester Street included new ADA-compliant sidewalks, new traffic signals, and new signage. A smaller portion of Broadway also received bike lanes. A graph (below), showed a downtrend in crashes over the last four years.
Safety Data Shows Crashes on Broadway in Kingston, NY Have Decreased
The data showed that since 2017, total crashes on Broadway peaked at roughly 140 in 2018 before declining by roughly 50% by 2024. Property damage seems to have followed a nearly identical trajectory.

Injuries, including serious and fatal injuries, also declined, though numbers were much lower overall during the entire 5-year time period. The city hopes that additional Long Range Transportation Plan projects will continue to usher in a new era of road safety for the residents.
