The summer has flown by, and hunting season is right around the corner. Bear hunting season for most types of hunting doesn't begin until October; however, if you want to get in on a bear program that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has for bear hunters, the time to prepare is now.

New York State is Looking For Bear Hunters to Help Track Bear Facts

You can become a New York State Black Bear Management Cooperator. Basically, each bear season, the NYS DEC works with successful bear hunters, along with predetermined taxidermists and meat processors, to collect vital information regarding bears that have been harvested.

Information such as age, sex, and weight is collected from black bears that hunters have harvested. This information is recorded and compiled, which allows the NYS DEC to better monitor the size and health of New York State's Black Bear population.

According to what I have read in the information released by the NYS DEC to encourage people to participate, it can take a while to get your information back, but you eventually will, and shortly after, you will also receive a commemorative patch for that season.
