CJ: That Time My Papasan Chair Fell 50-Feet Into a Pond

This was the first piece of furniture I purchased in my adult life.

There are certain moments in life that most of us never ever forget. Graduations, marriage, buying a house, having kids, all major things that happen to us over the course of our lives.

Now I'm not going to put a pice of furniture in the same memory box a the birth of my kids, but I do think that some of us remember the first piece of furniture we went out and bought ourselves.

For some of you it might have been a couch, a recliner, a TV, maybe even a bed. Not for me, the first piece I ever bought was something called a "papasan chair." I had like a tea cup seat that was on a pedestal and was the most comfortable thing!

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was living in Port Ewen, just outside of Kingston, at Lake Shore Villas off of route 9W. When I moved in, I had some of the furniture that my mom let me move out with. I had the bedroom stuff and a small TV, that's it.

TV, yes, but nothing to sit on to watch it, so at the suggestion of a friend, I went to the Pier One Imports store, over near were Walmart is in Kingston (I don't think the Walmart was even there yet, but I do remember Boston Market was!) to do a little shopping.

That's where I came across the papasan chair, and at the time I think it cost me something like a little over a hundred bucks. I load the chair in the radio station van (Big yellow B-94) that I used to work for and headed for home.

Once I got home, I started to carry the chair into my new apartment that over looked the lake. The walkway to get to the door was like 50 feet in the air (at least that's what I remember) and as I turned the corner it slipped out of my hands and fell 50 feet down into the lake.

After running down and with the help of a neighbor we fished it out of Lake Shore Villas lake, I let it dry for a day or so outside and moved it into the house where my butt enjoyed the heck out of it for a few years.

Thinking back I have no idea what happened to the chair after I moved but I do think the papasan chair doesn't get the respect it deserves. Did you have one of these? Still have one? Call or text us through the Wolf app and if you have one, I would love to see a picture of it.
