2021’s Groundhog Day Will be Virtual
February 2021 has started off with quite an impression. The first day of this month gave us a massive storm here in the Hudson Valley. As for the second day of the month, we can welcome in everyone’s favorite groundhog.
Punxsutawney Phil will make his announcement of six more weeks of winter or six more weeks of spring. Which do you prefer? I’m excited for spring and I say that it will be here sooner than later. We can’t see Phil in person this year due to the pandemic. This ceremony can be watched online through live streaming as early as 6:30 am February 2, 2021.
The celebration will take place at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania but guests are not allowed to attend in person. We can watch as Phil leaves his burrow to give us a glimpse of what is to come within the upcoming months. I wonder if Phil will miss all the lights, people and attention this year.
As the legend states, if Phil sees his shadow then we will have six more weeks of winter. If this little cutie doesn’t see his shadow, we can all celebrate the arrival of spring. In 2020, Phil didn’t see his shadow therefore we had an early spring.
Ever wonder why a groundhog is the animal of choice for the weather predictions? This dates to the 1800s when a bear was the first choice. When folks couldn’t find badgers to do the job instead, the surroundings filled with groundhogs (woodchucks) helped solved their problem. After this, a legend was born.
