The New York State Police have announced the results of another "Operation Hard Hat" detail focusing on violators in work zones on a popular New York highway.

Operation Hard Hat in New York

Operation Hard Hat is an ongoing effort by the NYSP and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to enhance work zone safety along all New York highways. To do so, State Troopers will oftentimes disguise themselves as construction workers to observe drivers who violate traffic laws while driving through a work zone, focusing on speeding and distracted driving.

These details are designed to protect highway workers and keep everyone safe.

Back in August, Operation Hard Hat targeted a section of the Taconic State Parkway that resulted in the NYSP issuing 76 citations, including 32 for speeding, 8 for cell phone use, 2 for Move Over law violations, and other traffic offenses.

Following the success on the Taconic, the NYSP informed drivers that they should expect more enforcement details on various roads soon.

New York State Police Target Drivers on I-684

This week, the NYSP Troop K conducted an Operation Hard Hat detail of its own on the northbound side of I-684 in the Town of Southeast, NY, while NYS DOT work crews repaired a guiderail on the left shoulder of the highway. According to a social media post, the detail took place on Tuesday, September 23rd, 2025, and resulted in State Police issuing 74 various tickets to drivers, including 45 tickets for speeding.

State police also reported that troopers observed several drivers exceeding 90 mph in the work zone, as well as a few drivers traveling at 87 mph. They also reminded drivers to "Slow down, move over, and drive safely in work zones. Lives depend on it."

To date, Operation Hard Hat has resulted in the NYSP issuing tickets to hundreds of drivers who break traffic law while driving through work zones across New York.
