I was never much of a runner, that is until we were forced to figure out ways to stay healthy during the COVID-19 lockdown.

When gyms closed up shop, I found the nearest trail and just started running. That was back in March of 2020 and I haven't stopped. I can truly say it was probably the only thing that kept me sane during one of the most uncertain times in my life.

Unfortunately, I'm still a slow runner, but I still love it.

If you're looking to get into running, May is the perfect month as it is National Running Safety Month.

RunningIndustry.Org has everything you need from preparing for your first run to train training for a marathon. But most importantly they breakdown everything you need to know safety wise.

Here are the 6 important rules to follow when getting out there for a run:

Be Healthy.
Be Safe.
Be Protected.
Be Seen.
Be Aware.
Be Together.

These tips range from how to navigate running with a mask on, how to return to running after being diagnosed with COVID, and how to be safe when you're alone or out at night while running.

In and around the Hudson Valley, we have a ton of options when it comes to talking to running professionals and getting fit for proper running gear.

Fleet Feet in Poughkeepsie, Confluence Running in Goshen and Ridgefield Running Company all come highly recommended. At these stores you'll find professionals who can lead you into shoes that fit your needs as well as ways to prepare for whatever running goals you may have.

Will you be hitting the trails with an extra pep in your step this month? Where are you running to?
