Do you recognize these sounds? Some of our favorite bird sounds come from ones that we may not always see but can hear from a distance.

I've noticed an increase of different bird sounds and a collective singing as the weather continues to warm up in the Hudson Valley.

How Can Bird Lovers Recognize Their Distinct Sounds From A Free App?

More than ever, our friendly bird friends have been singing their lovely songs day and night within the Hudson Valley. I've been curious about special bird calls and noises, so I decieded to download an app to learn more.

As you listen to these bird sounds, you may recognize a few. Grab your binoculars after this to see what you can spot in the trees.

The Cornell Lab, Merlin is the name of the app.

This bird ID app that can recognize over 8,500+ bird species. Merlin is a new bird ID tool which was created by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. 

I provided a screenshot to show how they were identified and the names of the singing birds. I was finally able to discover this one bird with the prettiest song that I haven't been able to spot, which was the White-throated Sparrow.

1.) American Robin

An American Robin may be one of the most commonly seen birds within New York State. This is the one bird that I can recognize by name when I see it. Cornell Lab, All About Birds shared,

"Robins are popular birds for their warm orange breast, cheery song, and early appearance at the end of winter."

2.) Tufted Titmouse

A Tufted Titmouse may be a bird that could be hard to see. By using the Cornell Lab Merlin app I was able to find out exactly who was making noise without seeing it close up. This is one of my favorite bird noises.

Cornell Lab, All About Birds referred to these birds as a "very vocal songbird". They also shared

"Tufted Titmice look large among the small birds that come to feeders, an impression that comes from their large head and eye, thick neck, and full bodies."

3. Gray Catbird

A Gray Catbird also has a familiar bird call. I love discovering bird sounds that I have heard in the past but didn't have a way of detecting it.

Cornell Lab, All About Birds shared,

"Gray Catbirds are relatives of mockingbirds and thrashers, and they share that group’s vocal abilities, copying the sounds of other species and stringing them together to make their own song."

The Gray Catbird’s long song may last for up to 10 minutes.

4.) White Throated Sparrow

A White Throated Sparrow has one of my favorite bird sounds. I was curious about this specific noise and after years, I learned who was singing this unique song.

Cornell Lab, All About Birds shared,

"White-throated Sparrows are brown above and gray below with a striking head pattern. The black-and-white-striped head is augmented by a bright white throat and yellow between the eye and the bill, which is gray."

5.) Red Headed Woodpecker

Have you ever heard of Red-Headed Woodpeckers making drumming or drilling noise on trees? Some may also say that this noise has a hammering sound.

When the Red-Headed Woodpecker came up on my Merlin ID app, I became excited because I didn't realize that Red-Headed Woodpeckers made additional noises besides a hammering sound.

"Red-headed Woodpeckers give all kinds of chirps, cackles, and other raucous calls. "
